Silvano Dallan – A Guelph Legend

For over six decades, Silvano Dallan has been more than a barber — he’s been a cornerstone of Guelph’s community. From the hum of his clippers to the familiar rhythm of his stories, Silvano’s barbershop has always been more than just a place to get a haircut — it’s where generations connect, where tradition lives, and where craftsmanship still matters.

Silvano’s journey began in Italy at age 17, learning the art of barbering the old-fashioned way — by practicing on friends and family, guided by his brother and sister. At 18, he boarded a ship to Canada and arrived in Guelph in 1961, wasting no time before stepping behind the chair at his brother George’s shop on Douglas Street.

He became known for his taper backs and brush cuts — the clean, classic styles of the era — always finished with the smooth touch of a straight razor. When the Beatles became popular and long hair became the trend, Silvano didn’t miss a beat. He trained in Toronto, refined his scissor work, and kept Guelph looking sharp through every style shift.

In 1969, he opened S. Dallan Men’s Hairstyling at Willow West Mall — a modern new plaza where his reputation continued to grow. For 41 years, that shop was a neighborhood institution. In 2010, Silvano relocated to his current location on Edinburgh Road North, where he still cuts hair five days a week.

Today, Silvano’s clients include children, fathers, and grandfathers — three generations who trust one man with their hair. Some travel from across Ontario — even from New York and Atlanta — just to sit in his chair.

He’s seen styles change, families grow, and the city evolve — but one thing has never changed: when you sit in Silvano’s chair, you’re not just getting a haircut — you’re becoming part of Guelph’s living history.

Paul – Partner, Master Barber

Paul’s journey in the world of hair began long before he ever stepped into a classroom. As a young man, he spent time working at his aunt’s brother’s shop in Guelph, where he discovered a natural talent and genuine passion for the art of hairstyling. That early experience inspired him to pursue formal training, and he enrolled in Kitchener Hair School.

In a class of 80 students—where he was the only male—Paul didn’t just hold his own; he thrived. A highlight of his school years was a class-wide competition where Paul’s skills stood out, earning him first place—something he still looks back on with pride.

After graduating, Paul refined his craft at Ventresca Salon in Guelph, a boutique hair salon where he focused on perfecting technique and elevating his artistry. In 1982, he joined the team at Dallan’s and quickly became an integral part of the shop. Just two years later, in 1984, Paul became a partner alongside Silvano.

Paul has worked in the industry for over four decades, and he’s never lost his love for the craft. For many people, retirement is the goal—but for Paul, when you truly love what you do, why stop? He still finds joy in every haircut, every conversation, and every familiar face that walks through the door.

One of Paul’s most cherished memories at Dallan’s was the day he had the honour of cutting four generations of the same family—one after another. For Paul, that moment said it all—four generations, one chair, and a lifetime of pride in doing what he loves.

In 2017, Paul’s son Steven joined the team, a milestone that filled Paul with joy and pride. Knowing that one day he’ll pass the torch to Steven and see the legacy of Dallan’s carried forward is both meaningful and deeply fulfilling.

Steven – Where Tradition Meets Style

Steven isn’t just a barber — he’s a modern craftsman with deep roots.

He began his career in 2010 after graduating with a Cosmetology diploma from Marvel Beauty School in Kitchener. He then spent two years apprenticing with the Regis Salon Corporation, where he refined his technique and built a strong foundation in styling and client care. From the start, it was about more than just hair — it was about helping people feel confident, polished, and proud of how they show up in the world.

Steven’s passion for hair started early. He loved experimenting with his own hairstyles and quickly learned the power of a sharp appearance. It sparked a fascination with the way hair can enhance someone's personality, mood, and confidence. Today, he uses that same creative spark — along with his artistry, experience, and skillset — to design personalized styles that help clients look and feel their best.

Steven spent much of his youth at Dallan’s Hairstyling. With his high school nearby and a part-time job in the same mall as the original shop, he was often just steps away from the action. Over the years, the barbershop became more than familiar — it became formative. Watching Silvano and his father, Paul, at work gave him a front-row seat to the skill, pride, and connection that defined the Dallan’s tradition.

In 2017, Steven chose to fully embrace barbering. What drew him to Dallan’s was the chance to work alongside the mentors who had shaped his life — his dad, Paul, and Silvano — two legends in the business who helped define the shop’s identity.

Now an established barber at Dallan’s, Steven thrives on the creativity and variety that each day brings. No two heads of hair — or people — are the same, and that’s exactly what keeps his work dynamic and meaningful.

His goal is to continue building his clientele at Dallan’s and, one day, open a shop of his own — where the timeless traditions he grew up with can meet the modern styles he helps shape every day.
